Cop Infuriated With Rolling Stones Releases New Images of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev
These startling images were released today by a tactical photographer with the Boston police department. In them we see Dzhokhar Tsarnaev climbing out of the boat, showing that he has no weapons, with a police laser positioned on his head. Now, I wanted to post these for a couple of reasons. First, these show the true face of evil and are a stark difference from the Rolling Stones cover. Second, the officer who released these images has been relieved of his duties.
Now, I say all of this to make a point. If Rolling Stones had shown better judgement in what they released. If the image they released had not shown Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in an almost angelic way, these images would never have seen the light of day publicly. While I agree that Rolling Stones had horrible ethics in their cover, I feel that these images had to be seen. Why? Because too often the media tries to idolize and humanize these people. These images allow us to see exactly how intense this standoff was and what he did. We need to see these images for our own good. We need to realize that people like Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are not to be pitied or idolized. I am saddened that this officer lost his job over this but he felt morally responsible. Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best, “the only right is what is after my constitution; the only wrong is what is against it.”
I am a firm believer that photojournalism is an absolute necessity. We would never fully understand the horrors if we didn’t see the images. Images of September 11th allowed us to have empathy for the victims and become enraged with the terrorists. They serve a vital purpose in today’s world. They keep us human and connected when used correctly.
