I Adore Joe Gargery

Joe Gargery

Have you ever had a deep longing to reach inside a book and hug anyone before?  That’s exactly how I feel about Joe Gargery.  He’s just such an amazingly touching character.  The pain he suffers in silence.  It is not the people who belly ache about their misfortunes that truly are pained, it is the silent that need the most love.  He takes the abuse from his wife because he will not lay a hand on a woman.  The pain from his childhood is so apparent.  The fact that he is illiterate just adds to the entire misfortune that is Joe.  What a truly tragic figure he is and yet there is a strength to him.  The fact that he takes blows for Pip and seems to truly love him, that’s a strength.  I adore him.  He has quickly gone from a secondary being in the story to one of my literary favorites very quickly.  You can tell a lot about a man’s character by what he does, not by what he says he does.  That is absolutely Joe.  Dickens is well known for the portrayal of tragically strong characters and I personally think Joe Gargery is probably one of his finest characters!
