Even Thieves Have Heart
I always try to have faith that everyone has a heart and empathy. It is often tested by news stories. However, today I read a story that just proves that even criminals have some sort of heart.
The non-profit agency San Bernardino County Sexual Assault Services office had their computer equipment stolen on July 31. The burglars shimmied between floor boards and walls to get past the building’s security system. The director of the non-profit, Candy Stallings, said that there were six computers with hard drives, a laptop, and a bag of valuables taken. It is heart wrenching to think of what information these thieves would have gotten off those computers.
Well the next morning, Stallings received a phone call around 4:30 a.m. from the police. They told her that there was more suspicious activity taking place at her office. What she found upon her arrival was nothing short of a miracle.
“All my stuff was in front of the door,” she told the station. “There was a shopping cart, and there were the PCs that were taken, there was the laptop. Everything was there.”
In the laptop the burglars left a note which stated “We had no idea what we were takeing. Here your stuff back. We hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in peoples live. God bless.”
Now, it is not often that stolen merchandise is recovered and it never really happens that it is returned. However, what really set this apart in my mind is the fact that they left a note. Now it may be a note that makes you weep for the education in this country but the heart and meaning are pure. They returned the items because they possess a conscience. That says something and it made me smile for sure.
